LAKEWOOD, NJ - Three Delmarva pitchers combine to strike out 16 BlueClaws as the Shorebirds topped Lakewood 5-0 at FirstEnergy Park on Friday night.
Delmarva (34-19/82-40) won their 82nd game of the year, one off the club record, while improving to 13-6 against the BlueClaws (23-29/52-70).
Delmarva opened the scoring with two runs in the second inning, including an RBI single from Nick Horvath. Three solo home runs then expanded the lead. Johnny Rizer's first home run came in the third for a 3-0 Delmarva lead. Then in the fourth, both Horvath, his seventh, and JC Encarnacion, who hit his ninth home run, took Victor Santos deep.
Santos (5-9) came out after four innings, allowing five runs, four earned. He was the first BlueClaws pitcher this season to allow three home runs in a game.
Meanwhile, the BlueClaws got little going offensively. Grayson Rodriguez retired all nine batters he faced while striking out six. Nick Vespi (8-6) came on in the fourth and threw two scoreless innings.
Ruben Garcia got the last 12 outs while striking out five to earn his fifth save of the season. Francisco Morales threw the last four innings for the BlueClaws. He did not allow a run and struck out eight.
Jonathan Guzman, Carlos De La Cruz, and Abrahan Gutierrez had the three hits for the BlueClaws.
Adam Hall had two hits and two stolen bases for the Shorebirds.
The teams continue their series on Saturday night at 7:05 pm. LHP Manuel Silva (4-5) starts for Lakewood opposite LHP Ryan Wilson (5-4).
