LAKEWOOD, NJ - Dalton Guthrie scored on a game-ending passed ball and the BlueClaws rallied for another win, 5-4 over Rome on Thursday in front of 9,444 at FirstEnergy Park.
The walk-off win was the 10th by the BlueClaws this year and they erased a 4-1 deficit from the seventh inning. It was the eighth seventh inning-or-later comeback for the BlueClaws since July 23rd. Lakewood (36-16/77-44) is now 33 games over .500 for the first time in franchise history. They have taken the first two games of the series from Rome (23-28/63-58).
Down 4-1, the BlueClaws came back to tie the game with three runs in the seventh inning. Dalton Guthrie hit a SAC fly for the first and then Jose Antequera scored on a balk to bring the BlueClaws within 4-3. After base hits by Jake Scheiner and Rodolfo Duran, Nick Maton singled home Scheiner to tie the game.
Guthrie started the ninth off Troy Bacon with a double and after Lakewood loaded the bases with one out, Maton struck out but the ball squirted by the catcher, allowing Guthrie to score the winning run.
Luis Carrasco (5-1) gave up one walk over 4.2 innings in relief to earn the win.
Rome opened the scoring with a three-run third inning. A two-run single from Brandon Venter put the Braves up 2-0 and they added a run on an RBI single from Derian Cruz for a 3-0 lead.
Rodolfo Duran homered for the BlueClaws in the bottom of the fourth, his team-leading 16th home run of the season. Duran, the reigning South Atlantic League Player of the Week, now has four home runs since last Friday.
Trey Harris doubled home a run in the fifth and chased Gustavo Armas. The Lakewood starter gave up four runs, three earned, in 4.1 innings, his shortest of six starts since joining the BlueClaws last month. Rome starter Jasseel de la Cruz gave up one run in 5.2 innings but did not factor in the decision.
Duran had two hits in the win, including his home run.
The crowd of 9,444 was the seventh largest in BlueClaws history.
The teams finish their series on Friday night at 7:05 pm. RHP Andrew Brown (4-2) starts for Lakewood opposite RHP Odalvi Javier (3-9).
