Greenville starter Bryan Mata and relievers Hunter Smith and Pat Goetze combined to shut out the Lexington Legends 6-0 on three hits Saturday night at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.
Greenville opened the scoring with a run in the first inning. Lorenzo Cedrola started the game with a single. He stole second, moved to third on a ground out and scored on Tyler Hill's single.
The Drive added a run in the second inning for a 2-0 margin, and they scored two more in the fifth. With one out, Santiago Espinal reached on an error by second baseman Gabriel Cancel. Espinal moved to second on a wild pitch, and continued to third when catcher Meibrys Viloria's throw to second went into center field for an error. Hill walked and stole second, and after Ryan Scott struck out, Roldani Baldwin's single scored Espinal and Hill, and the Drive led 4-0.
Granger Studdard's solo homer in the sixth made the score 5-0.
Greenville scored its final run in the seventh on consecutive singles by Hill, Scott and Baldwin.
Mata (2-1) pitched five innings and got the win. He held the Legends hitless until Viloria singled with one out in the bottom of the fifth. Viloria also singled off Smith in the seventh. Marten Gasparini's eighth-inning double off Goetze was the Legends' only other hit.
Legends starter Travis Eckert (3-6) took the loss.
Each team has won one game in the series, which continues Sunday. First pitch is set for 2:05 p.m.
