(WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK, Lexington, Ky.) Fred Ford's seventh-inning homer broke a 3-3 tie and the Lexington Legends won their 2013 home opener 4-3 over the Asheville Tourists Monday night.
The Tourists jumped out in front in the third inning. With two outs, Tom Murphy doubled and Francisco Sosa reached base on a throwing error by third baseman Michael Antonio as Murphy moved to third.
Derek Jones followed with a blast over the center field wall to give Asheville a 3-0 lead. Jones also doubled and singled.
The Legends came back with a run in the bottom of the third on a two-out single by Ethan Chapman, a wild pitch and a double by Raul Mondesi.
Lexington drew even in the fourth when Antonio singled with two outs and Jin Ho-Shin hit the first home run by a Legend this season.
The score remained 3-3 until Ford hit a solo home run leading off the seventh. Ford's homer also cleared the wall in center field, not far from where Jones' homer landed.
Mark Peterson pitched the eighth and ninth inning for Lexington and made the lead stand up as he earned his first save of the season.
Alec Mills (1-0), who relieved starter Daniel Stumpf at the start of the sixth inning, also pitched two scoreless innings and earned the victory. All three runs given up by Stumpf were unearned. He allowed four hits in five innings. Asheville starter Shane Broyles (0-1), who worked six and two-thirds innings, was the losing pitcher.
The Legends have won their last two games after losing their first three of the season.
The Legends and Tourists meet again Tuesday night. Game time at Whitaker Bank Ballpark is 7:05 p.m.
