Martinez, Bullpen Pitch Loons to Win

Two more games remain in regular season
August 31, 2013

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Jonathan Martinez notched his second straight quality start, limiting the Fort Wayne TinCaps to one earned run on six hits over six solid innings, in a 4-3 win for the Great Lakes Loons in front of 7,463 at Parkview Field.

Martinez (3-4) scattered six hits over six innings and allowed just one earned run. He walked just one and struck out six to notch his third win of the season. Since returning from short-season Ogden, Martinez has a 3.18 ERA.

Rob Rogers continued the Loons pitching excellence with two scoreless innings. Owen Jones allowed a solo home run to Luis Tejada in the ninth but locked down his seventh save of the season.

TinCaps starter Max Fried (6-7) took the loss despite seven solid innings. The southpaw allowed three runs (two earned) and struck out two.

The Loons offense spread nine hits out evenly amongst seven hitters. Jose Capellan (second inning), Devin Shines (third) and Tyler Ogle (eighth) each produced a run-scoring hit.

Ogle and Leo Rodriguez notched two hits each. After the Loons scored two in the second inning, thrice the TinCaps pulled to within one run - doing so on each of their three runs scored - but never could re-tie the score or take the lead.

The Loons (67-70 overall, 40-27 second half) and TinCaps (70-67, 27-41) play the penultimate game of the regular season Sunday night at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Zachary Bird (2-4, 4.75 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Loons. He will be opposed by right-hander Colin Rea (1-1, 2.43). The game will be broadcast live on ESPN 100.9-FM and ESPN1009.com.
