MIDLAND, Mich. - A win wasn't in cards for the Great Lakes Loons on Sunday afternoon against the Beloit Snappers as they fell 7-1 to push their losing streak to a franchise-record 10 games. The streak now surpasses the previous record of nine games which occurred in May 2013.
The opponent has scored first in nine of the games during the streak and has scored in the first three innings nine times, as well. The Loons have also allowed at least five runs in every game of the slide and have scored more than three runs just once.
It was another strenuous afternoon for the Great Lakes (8-16, 44-49) offense as they were only able to muster three hits as a team with Oneil Cruz, Mitchell Hansen and Zach Reks each responsible for one apiece. Hansen put a charge into one in the 8th inning for his fifth home run of the season. Brendon Davis saw his 10-game hit streak come to end, but thanks to three walks extended his on-base streak to 16 games.
Dustin May (L, 5-5) fought through six innings in his start for the Loons allowing four runs on seven hits. The 19-year-old righty kept the walks down (one) and struck out seven batters. Angel German got two innings of work in relief allowing a run on three hits while Wills Montgomerie made his Loons debut in the 9th inning.
Beloit (13-11, 45-48) barreled up Great Lakes pitching all day with their seven runs coming on 12 hits. Eric Mariñez went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI. Trace Loehr and Jesus Lopez each had multi-hit games and also had an RBI on their stat line. As a team, the Snappers also went 6-for-16 with runners in scoring position.
Zack Erwin (W, 3-2) was outstanding through five shutout innings allowing just one hit and issuing one walk. He too, like May, had seven strikeouts in the game. The Beloit pitching staff produced 15 strikeouts as a group.
The Loons will attempt to snap the skid on Monday afternoon with a special 2:05 p.m. first pitch. Leo Crawford (4-8, 4.73 ERA) will oppose the Snappers' Seth Martinez (2-4, 2.75). Coverage starts on ESPN 100.9-FM at 1:35 p.m.
The Great Lakes Loons are the 2016 Midwest League Champions and have been a Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers since 2007.
