Bats and Mets split doubleheader

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Louisville Bats (17-22) and the Syracuse Mets (22-16) split the doubleheader at NBT Bank Stadium with shutouts on both sides. The first of two seven-inning games was a win for the Bats by a score of 2-0. The second game being a win for the Mets ended with a score of 5-0.

Game one
Game one of the doubleheader started out quiet for both sides. The first four innings went scoreless on both sides with someone reaching base in the first two innings and then both sides going three up, three down in the third and fourth innings.
The top of the fifth for Louisville started out with back to back singles from Scott Schebler and Rob Refsnyder. The Bats scored the first the run of the game in the inning when Juan Graterol hit into a double play that scored Schebler from third. Schebler went 2-for-2 with two singles and an intentional walk.
The only other run of the game came in the top of the seventh. Brian O'Grady started the inning with a double then advanced to third on a flyout by Phillip Ervin. O'Grady went on to score on a sac fly from Refsnyder making the score 2-0.
The Bats held the Mets in the bottom of the seventh and went on to get their third shutout win of the season.
Keury Mella (2-3, 4.95) started the game for the Bats getting the win in his 5.2 innings pitched. Mella struck out five, giving up two hits and walking three. Ian Krol came into pitch the remainder of the sixth, striking out one and not allowing a hit. Anthony Bass got his ninth save, leading the league in saves, pitching an inning, allowing a hit and striking out two.  
Pitching for the Mets Casey Coleman (0-3, 3.06) picked up the loss pitching 5.0 innings giving up one of Bats' runs on four hits and striking out three. Eric Hanhold finished out the game for the Mets, pitching the last 2.0 innings, giving up a run, a hit, and a walk.
Game Two
The second game of the day didn't stay remain scoreless as long as the first game with the Mets getting on the board first. Dilson Herrera started the bottom of the second with a single and David Thompson was hit by a pitch. A groundout from Rymer Liriano moved both runners over and then Herrera scored on a sac fly from Colton Herrara. An RBI single from Tim Tebow brought Syracuse up 2-0 after two innings.
Syracuse added to their lead on a solo shot from Herrera in the bottom of the fourth. The home run was followed by a double from Thompson and then a RBI single from Liriano to make the score 4-0.
In the bottom of the fifth, Danny Espinosa hit a solo shot of his own to put Syracuse up 5-0. Espinosa and Herrera both went 2-for-3 with a homerun. The Mets tripled the amount of hits they had in game one with nine hits in game two.
Syracuse held the Bats for the rest of the game, making this the first time the Bats have been shutout this season.
Starting pitchers on both sides only pitched 2.0 innings. Jackson Stephens (3-1, 3.65) got the loss, giving up two runs on three hits and striking out one. For the Mets, Ryan O'Rourke also gave up three hits, but no runs, walking one and striking out two.
The Mets went deeper into their bullpen for game two with Corey Taylor and P.J. Conlon both pitching an inning consecutively. Both struck out two and didn't give up a hit, and Conlon walked one. Paul Sewald (2-1, 2.50) got the win, striking out one batter in his 2.0 innings pitched.
For Louisville, Sal Romano replaced Stephens throwing 2.0 innings and giving up two of the Mets' runs on four hits, walking and striking out one. Jimmy Herget and Matt Bowman pitched the final two innings. Herget allowed a run on two hits and struck out one. Bowman shutout the side with three strikeouts in the bottom of the sixth.
Louisville and New York Mets' Triple-A affiliate Syracuse stay at NBT Bank Stadium to play the final game of the three-game series with first pitch set for Thursday at 6:35 p.m. Louisville's righty Vladimir Gutierrez (1-3, 7.84) will face Syracuse's righty Zach Lee (2-0, 4.86) in the rubber match.
