LOWELL, MA - It was Christmas in July at LeLacheur Park and but the Spinners (21-17) didn't get the gift they wished for as the Hudson Valley Renegades (24-13) spoiled the fun with a comeback victory.
Both teams came out of the gates hot in this one. Starting pitcher Yorvin Pantoja went 3.1 innings but surrendered seven earned runs on four walks and five hits.
Despite being put in a 1-0 hole in the first, Tyler Dearden blasted his first home run of the season to deep right-center field to make it 2-1 Spinners.
The offense continued its success in the bottom of the second after Andre Colon ripped a one-out double followed by a home run from catcher Alan Marrero, his first of the season.
Trailing 7-4 in the bottom of the fourth, the Spinners roared back with Tyler Esplin singling to leadoff the inning and Ortega reaching on a fielding error. Colon reached to load the bases and Marrero singled to bring home Esplin. Dylan Hardy brought in Ortega on a fielder's choice and Jarren Duran singled home the tying run.
Dearden struck again with his second home run of the night to lead off the bottom of the fifth to put the Spinners on top 8-7.
The Renegades charged back with three runs of their own off of Kevin Biondic who would be credited with his first loss of the season. Tanner Raiburn, Victor Garcia, and Danny Bethea held the Renegades scoreless in the last three innings but the offense could not muster a run in the last four innings to fall to Hudson Valley 10-8.
With the loss, the Spinners will play the rubber match with the Renegades as Thaddeus Ward takes the mound with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
