LOWELL, MA - The Spinners (21-19) kicked off a three-game series with the State College Spikes (16-23) in front of their home crowd on Friday night but unfortunately it was a rough start to the beginning of the series.
A pair of early defensive lapses doomed Lowell from the start as starting pitcher Chris Machamer allowed six runs (one earned) in only 1.2 innings of work. Rio Gomez filled in with 3.1 innings of work and held the Spikes to only one earned run.
Lowell got on the board in the sixth inning after Tyler Dearden doubled to right field and later came in to score on a sacrifice fly from Xavier LeGrant. Jarren Duran also extended his hit-streak to 10 games in the inning with a single.
Austin Glorius made his Spinners debut with two innings of relief. He gave up two earned runs on three hits and a walk.
Lowell struck back in the bottom of the seventh after back-to-back doubles from Jake Romanski and Kole Cottam. Tyler Dearden singled to right to drive in Cottam to cut the lead to 9-3, but it was too little too late.
The Spinners return on Saturday night with Eduard Bazardo on the hill. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
