CLINTON, IA (August 9, 2017) - Clinton LumberKings manager David Macias will be stepping down from his coaching duties and resigning from the Seattle Mariners organization. The Mariners have named Tony Arnerich as Macias replacement.
Macias tenure in Clinton was a brief one. He took over for LumberKings opening day manager Pat Shine following his dismissal from the Mariners. Macias first game as skipper for the LumberKings came on the first day of the second half of the Midwest League season. In his managerial debut, he led the LumberKings to a 6-2 win at Ashford University Field against the Beloit Snappers. During his time as skipper for the LumberKings the team went 18-27 and he was in his second season in the Mariners organization before announcing his resignation. A Vanderbilt alumnus, Macias will now take a coaching job with the perennial SEC power Vanderbilt Commodores which will allow him to work closer to his home in Nashville, Tennessee.
Arnerich, will replace Macias as the LumberKings manager. The San Francisco native is currently in his first season in the Mariners organization and was serving as the Minor League Coaching Coordinator before earning the promotion. A catcher during his playing days, Arnerich played in the farm systems of the Kansas City Royals and then Florida Marlins, reaching as high as Double-A in both team's minor league affiliates. He made a brief stint in the Midwest League as a player, appearing in 11 games for the Burlington Bees in 2002. Since retiring in 2005, Arnerich has served as the manager of the St. Cloud River Bats of the Northwoods League from 2005-2008 and for seven years, 2007-2014, he was an Assistant Coach with University California Berkeley where he helped to lead the Golden Bears to a 2011 NCAA College World Series appearance.
Since the LumberKings joined the Midwest League as a Charter Member in 1954 they have never had three managers serve in the same season.
Arnerich will turn in his first scorecard as the LumberKings manager on Thursday night when the team opens a four-game road trip and series with the Beloit Snappers. Right-handed pitcher Ryne Inman (1-1, 8.40) will take the ball for Clinton and face Snapper's left-handed pitcher Kyle Twomey (1-2, 4.64). Game time is slated for 7:00 PM (C.D.T.) with the pregame show on 100.3 FM WCCI beginning at 6:45 PM, Erik Oas will be on the call.
