Clinton, IA - The Midwest League announced their pitcher and player of the week (7/14-7/20) this past Monday, and for the second time this season, a LumberKing found themselves as the recipient of one the awards.
Right-handed starter Edwin Diaz - one of four LumberKings named to the Western Division All-Star team - earned his first "MWL Pitcher of the Week" honor after shutting down the Great Lakes Loons on July 17th in Midland, MI. Diaz held the Loons to just three hits over six shutout frames. He did not walk a single batter for the first time in 2014, all while matching a season-high eight strikeouts. The LumberKings went on to win the game 5-0, their second straight 5-0 shutout of Great Lakes.
The 20-year-old phenom is currently ranked as the No. 5 prospect in the Seattle Mariners organization according to Baseball America, and he certainly looked the part last Thursday.
His current record stands at 3-5 and he has a LumberKings rotation-best ERA of 3.32. He also leads the club with 79 strikeouts in 84 innings of work.
Outfielder Austin Wilson was named the "MWL Player of the Week" from April 28th to May 4th.
