Kernels Thump LumberKings in Finale

Seven-run fifth keys offensive outburst

Clinton, IA - The LumberKings head into the Midwest League Playoffs on a down note after a 15-6 loss to the Cedar Rapids Kernels Monday afternoon at Ashford University Field.

Adam Brett Walker hit a solo home run in the second to get Cedar Rapids going, who then extended the lead to 3-0 in the fourth.

Clinton bounced back with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning on a Gaby Guerrero RBI triple and a sac fly from Zach Shank. However, that's as close as they'd get.

The Kernels sent 11 to the plate against Steven Ewing in the fifth inning, and scored seven runs to build a 10-2 lead. Ewing was charged with nine earned runs in 4 2/3 innings.

They built the lead to 13-2 after Jonathan Murphy's three-run blast in the eighth inning. Guerrero was at it again for the LumberKings in the bottom of the eighth inning when he hit his second homer in as many days; this time a three-run shot to right.

Third baseman Zach Shank followed with his own homer, marking the third time Clinton has hit back-to-back homers on the season. It was Shank's first home run with the LumberKings and second pro homer after being drafted by the Mariners in June.

Clinton plays host to the Beloit Snappers in game one of the first round Wednesday. First pitch is set for 6:30 PM. Tickets can be purchase at the LumberKings ticket office or by calling 563-242-0727.
