CLINTON, IA (Dec. 8, 2016) - Right-handed pitcher, and 2016 Clinton LumberKing, Kevin Gadea will open the 2017 in the Major Leagues following his selection by the Tampa By Rays in this year's Rule 5 draft.

Gadea, 22, made 10 appearances and six starts for Clinton in 2016. The Nicaraguan native was a perfect 3-0 with a 2.15 ERA (12 ER/ 50.1 IP) with the LumberKings during the regular season while also factoring into the team's postseason run.

During the Lumberkings post season run, Gadea earned the win in game two of the Midwest League Semifinals Series against the Cedar Rapids Kernels with six strong innings of work, allowing one run, unearned, walking one, and striking out 11. In his final start with Clinton, Gadea was hung with the loss in game three of the Midwest League Championship Series. He logged 5 1/3 innings against the Great Lakes Loons allowing two runs on two hits while walking two and striking out eight.

Clinton, Class A, is the highest level Gadea has pitched at. Originally an infielder Gadea converted to a pitcher when he was signed by the Mariners in November 2012. His selection by the Rays means that Gadea will have to stay on the Major League roster throughout the season or else be returned to the Seattle Mariners.

As part of the acquisition, the Rays will send $100,000 to the Mariners as compensation for Gadea. Should Gadea be removed from the Rays big league roster, Seattle will be given a chance to buy him back at half the cost or $50,000.
