Beloit, WI - The LumberKings have picked a bad time to go into a tailspin. The Beloit Snappers polished off a four-game sweep of the LumberKings with a 2-0 win at Pohlman Field Tuesday night. The loss was the sixth straight for Clinton.
Wisconsin, who beat Kane County Tuesday afternoon, trails Clinton by just one game in the race for the final playoff spot in the Western Division.
Much like the rest of the series in Beloit, the LumberKings struggled to come up with big hits. Beloit starter Andres Avila limited Clinton's lineup to just three hits over six innings, but walked five and hit a batter. In all, the LumberKings were 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position. In the four-game series, Clinton was 6-for-40 with runners in scoring position.
The Snappers got a run in the first inning on Christopher Bostick's RBI single. Charles Kaalekahi kept them off the scoreboard again until Ryan Mathews hit a solo home run down the left field line to begin the fifth inning.
That's all the offense Beloit needed as Avila, Austin House and Tyler Vail combined for the five-hit shutout.
Gaby Guerrero and Luis Caballero each collected two hits for the LumberKings in the losing effort.
Clinton heads to Peoria for an important three-game series. While the LumberKings have lost six in a row, Peoria has done the exact same, leaving them three games back of Clinton. The LumberKings send right-hander Victor Sanchez (6-6, 2.68) against Peora right-hander Brad Watson (3-5, 3.86). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM CT.
