Clinton, IA - In a matchup with the second half wild card leaders, the Clinton LumberKings (26-30, 56-68) moved within three games of a playoff spot with a 10-5 victory over the visiting Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (29-27, 65-60). Edwin Diaz (5-7) allowed just one run over five innings, as the righty struck out seven in the win.
Each of Wisconsin's first two pitchers struggled in their outings. Starter Chad Thompson (2-1) and reliever Seth Harvey each allowed four runs, three earned. Thompson surrendered eight hits over just three innings, including a pair to both Aaron Barbosa and Joe DeCarlo. Though Harvey allowed only two hits, the righty hit two batters, both of which scored.
The LumberKings scored in six of their eight innings, which included three runs in both the first and the fifth. Barbosa began the first with a single, and after he picked up two of his three stolen bases on the night, he scored the opening run on an RBI single by Justin Seager. Jeff Zimmerman and DeCarlo each provided an RBI in the inning as well. Already down 3-0, the first of two errors on the night charged to Taylor Brennan led to a 4-0 Clinton lead after two innings.
Diaz had little trouble controlling a Timber Rattlers offense that had managed just two runs over its past four games, all losses. The Clinton starter struck out two in both the first and the second, as well as one in each of his final three innings. The lone run off of the righty came on Clint Coulter's two-out RBI single in the fourth.
The Wisconsin bullpen fared no batter than its starter, as the LumberKings broke the game open with three in the fifth off of Harvey. The righty hit both DeCarlo and Christian Carmichael to begin the inning, as RBI's by Luis Caballero, Barbosa, and Brett Thomas gave the Clinton bullpen a significant lead.
Seon Gi Kim allowed the first five to reach in the eighth, as the Timber Rattlers cut the deficit to four with a three run inning, but the righty retired the side in order in the ninth to preserve the Clinton victory.
All nine Clinton starters reached in the win, as Barbosa, Thomas, Tyler O'Neill, DeCarlo, and Peguero recorded multiple hits. All nine starters except for O'Neill scored. With two hits, DeCarlo extended his hit streak to a season high eight games.
The LumberKings will look for a second consecutive series victory at home Tuesday night, as Eddie Campbell (9-8, 4.88) and Preston Gainey (5-7, 3.96) are scheduled to start in the second game of the series. First pitch at Ashford University Field is set for 6:30 CT. The LumberKings radio broadcast can be heard on WCCI 100.3 FM, WCCIRadio.com, and LumberKings.com.
