May 10, 2014

PEARL, MS -- The Mississippi Braves defeated the Montgomery Biscuits 6-3 in game one of a five-game series at Trustmark Park, extending their current win-steak to five games. Elmer Reyes led the M-Braves offense with a three-hit night including an inside-the-park home run. The series continues with game two Sunday at 1:00 PM.

Mississippi (18-17) scored six runs on 11 hits while Montgomery (19-16) plated three runs on 11 hits. J.R. Graham started for the Braves but was forced to exit the game after a lengthy rain delay. Ryan Weber (1-0) worked the middle three innings to pick up his first win of the year. Weber held the Biscuits to one earned run on two hits and two walks. He struck out two.

Play was halted in the top of the first when the skies gave way to heavy rain. The Braves and Biscuits resumed play after an hour and five minute rain delay. Montgomery took a 1-0 lead in the third when Cameron Seitzer walked and scored on a Willie Argo double to left field.

The M-Braves took a 2-1 lead in the third. Cedric Hunter singled to right. Reyes then delivered an inside-the-park, two-run home run to left center. The last M-Brave to hit an inside-the-park homer was Jonathan Schuerholz on May 12, 2005, at Birmingham.

Matt Kennelly led off the bottom of the fourth with a single to left. Kyle Kubitza followed with a double and Emerson Landoni walked to load the bases. Dan Carroll's sacrifice fly made it a 3-1 game. Kubitza scored on a wild pitch and Hunter delivered a RBI-single to extend the Braves lead to 5-1.

In the top of the sixth, Seitzer singled and Argo walked. Jeremy Moore followed with a double to right, driving home Seitzer and cutting the Braves lead to 5-2.

Mississippi responded in the bottom of the sixth. Mycal Jones doubled and took third on a wild pitch. Reyes followed with a run-scoring single to extend the Braves lead to 6-2.

Montgomery added a run in the ninth to make it 6-3.

Matt Neil (1-2) worked three frames and took the loss. He gave up two earned runs on five hits and a home run. He struck out four batters.

In game two of this five-game series and 10-game homestand, M-Braves right-hander Aaron Northcraft (3-1, 2.82) toes the rubber. He'll counter Biscuits righty Victor Mateo (4-3, 3.57). First pitch is slated for 1:00 PM Sunday afternoon. Gates open at Noon.
