In Round 17 with Pick 495, the Detroit Tigers drafted Mahoning Valley Scrappers reliever Aaron Haase. He is the fifth Scrapper drafted and the fourth pitcher taken from the organization.

The right-hander posted a 4.82 ERA in 9.1 innings of work. In his 10 appearances, batters hit .222 against him with 22 strikeouts. He features a four-pitch repertoire consisting of a fastball, curveball, slider, and changeup. His fastball stays around the 92-93 MPH area and everything else is around 83-86 mph (_Prep Baseball Report_). Haase has an extremely high spin rate on all of his pitches. His fastball spins at 2497 RPM, his curveball spins at a staggering 2613 RPM and his slider takes the cake at 2695 RPM. As of June 25, his slider also featured a 100 Whiff%. Haase’s changeup is much different, it only spins at 1968 RPM.

Haase played his college ball at Wichita State University. His first two seasons were really up and down but this season he seemed to figure himself out and find his stride. In 25.1 innings he posted a 1.78 ERA last season (Baseball Reference). Haase struck out 24 hitters with an impressive 0.671 WHIP. Even when he struggled early the strikeout numbers were always there, in 32.2 innings in 2019 he struck out 38 and in 2020 he sat down 11 on strikes in 9.1 innings. Due to his outstanding 2021, he was named All-Conference First Team in the American Athletic Conference and is ranked 33rd in D!baseball.com’s Top 100 pitchers from an analytical standpoint (_GoShockers_).

Haase is from Amarillo, Texas, and was a three-time letter winner at Amarillo High School. He was also an all-state selection. His long journey has now led him to pitch for the Detroit Tigers.
