Five Scrappers Named NYPL All-Stars

STATE COLLEGE, P.A. - The New York-Penn League and the State College Spikes announced the North and South All-Star rosters for the NYPL's mid-summer classic on August 14. The Mahoning Valley Scrappers will send five representatives to the South roster: INF Tyler Freeman, OF Hosea Nelson, 1B Mitch Reeves, RHP Luis Santos, and LHP Randy Valladares.

Tyler Freeman earned a selection as he continues a 19-game hitting streak through Wednesday. Freeman leads the New York-Penn League in batting average (.388), hits (71), doubles (20), total bases (103), on-base percentage (.436), slugging percentage (.563), and OPS (.998). He is tied for the league lead in RBI (31) and he ranks second in runs scored (33). Freeman is the Cleveland Indians' No. 19-ranked prospect, according to MLB Pipeline.

Hosea Nelson is the reigning NYPL Player of the Month for July. He is batting .287 with 30 RBI and a team-high seven home runs. In his second season in Mahoning Valley, Nelson is third in the league in home runs and is one RBI behind Tyler Freeman for the league lead. He also ranks fourth in the league in slugging percentage (.488).

Mitch Reeves recently snapped a 12-game hitting streak on August 6 versus State College. He is named an All-Star after batting .281 in 47 games. In addition, he has slugged four home runs and has driven in 27 runs.

A pair of Scrappers relievers were named to the South roster, as well. RHP Luis Santos is tied for the NYPL lead in wins (5), and has contributed a 3.00 ERA in 24.0 innings (15 appearances). LHP Randy Valladares was named an All-Star following a perfect 3-0 record and a 2.08 ERA that leads all qualifiers on the Scrappers roster. Valladares also sports a 1.04 WHIP while showing a K/BB ratio of 4:1.

The North and South All-Stars square off at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park in State College, P.A. at 7:05pm on Tuesday, August 14.
