Scrappers vs. Doubledays Series Preview

Two of the New York-Penn League's best teams are slated to meet at Eastwood Field to kick off the second half of the season. The Mahoning Valley Scrappers (32-22) welcome the Auburn Doubledays (30-34) for three games, beginning with a doubleheader on Wednesday. 

The Scrappers hold a 2.0 game lead over Auburn at the All-Star break. Wednesday's games are the first two of six the teams will play over the next eight days. Mahoning Valley travels to Auburn for three games on Monday, August 20.

TALE OF THE TAPE

Doubledays INF Pablo O'Connor nearly has enough at-bats to qualify for league leaders, but assuming he di have enough, his .326 batting average would rank third in the New York-Penn League. Auburn OF Jacob Rhinesmith is batting .299 into the All-Star break - a number that is sixth in the NYPL.

Auburn's roster has three of the Washington Nationals' top 30 prospects, according to MLB Pipeline. 2018 second-round pick LHP Tim Cate is listed as the Nationals' No. 10 prospect. In addition, INF Jose Sanchaz (No. 16) and 2018 third-round pick RHP Reid Schaller (No. 21) are the on the Doubledays roster.

Mahoning Valley's Tyler Freeman leads the NYPL in six offensive categories: batting average (.376), slugging percentage (.550), OPS (.974), hits (76), doubles (21, and total bases (111).

Scrappers INF Henry Pujols has hit safely in 12 of his last 14 games, dating back to July 29. He is batting .400 (22-for-55) in that span with four home runs and 15 RBI. He has increased his batting average from .169 on July 29 to .255 at the All-Star break. Pujols capped off his first half with a go-ahead grand slam on the sixth inning on Sunday at West Virginia.

Mahoning Valley and Auburn boast two of the best offenses in the NYPL. Auburn is tied for the league lead in team batting average (.262) and Mahoning Valley is not far behind (.258). Mahoning Valley has manufactured 4.8 runs per game, while Auburn has plated 4.6 runs. Auburn averages 8.8 hits per game, while Mahoning Valley averages 8.5 hits.

Pitching problables for Mahoning Valley and Aurburn are still to be determined as of Monday. Wednesday's doubleheader begins at 6:00 p.m. and the second game will follow, 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game. Auburn and Mahoning Valley will play two 7-inning games on Wednesday. Thursday's game is scheduled to begin at 7:05 p.m.
