NILES, OH- In a shortened seven inning game the Mahoning Valley Scrappers defeated the Williamsport Crosscutters. The Scrappers benefited immensely from Williamsport’s three errors. All three affected the score in some way. The win is the Scrappers third straight, the last time they did so was June 16-18.

The Scrappers started the scoring in the bottom of the 1st. Trent “Buck” Anderson led off the game, and reached base due to an error by the second baseman. Two at-bats later Collin Gordon reached on four pitch walks. After Gordon and Anderson stole their way into scoring position Duncan Hewitt hit a sac fly to left field that scored Anderson from third.

The Scrappers would score again in the 4th. Once again they’d benefit from an error by Williamsport’s second baseman. Ethan Kavanaugh led off the inning with a double over the center fielder’s head. The next at-bat Anthony Herron Jr. drew a full count walk to put runners on first and second. After a sac bunt from Yo Yo Nunez to put the runners on second and third Williamsports pulled the infield in to try and keep the Scrapper’s offense at one run. The move didn’t work out as Garrett Sheffield hit a rocket on the ground that went off the second baseman’s glove allowing both runners to score.

In the bottom of the 5th the Scrappers added to their lead. Jarrod Belbin smacked a two out double that hit off the top of the right field wall. Some aggressive baserunning would pay a great dividend for Belbin. He stole third and the Williamsport’s catcher threw the ball into left field. The wild throw allowed him to advance home and give the Scrapper a 4-0 lead.

Starter John Medich had an impressive outing. He tossed 4.2 innings, allowed no runs and struck out five. He gave up five hits and two walks. Due to his performance he was named Baird Brothers Player of the Game. The bullpen did their part as well, Steven Sanchez, Alonzo White and Adam Wibert threw the last 2.1 innings and didn’t give up a run. Wibert entered with a jam, runners on first and third with two outs in the 7th, but was able to preserve the shutout with a strikeout.

Offensively, the Scrappers combined for five hits. Yo Yo Nunez had a multi-hit game going 2-2 with two singles and a sacrifice bunt. The other three hits came from Kavanaugh, Gordon and Belbin.
