Cardinals Edge Marauders in Opener

Polanco, Osuna, and Gonzalez all tally three-hit games in defeat

Bradenton, Fla. - The Marauders (2-12) outhit the Palm Beach Cardinals 12-7 and played error-free defense but fell 4-3 on a frenzied finish Thursday at McKechnie Field. Alen Hanson was tagged out trying to score from second on an infield single by Gregory Polanco for the final out. The Marauders have dropped six one-run contests this season.

Charlie Morton started for the Marauders, making an MLB rehab appearance. Morton pitched three innings, striking out two but also allowing two runs. Stephen Piscotty tagged the righty for an RBI-double in the first, and Colin Walsh smashed a solo homer in the third to stake the Cardinals to a 2-0 lead.

The Marauders knotted the score in the third with a two out rally. Benji Gonzalez singled off Tim Cooley (W, 2-1), and Polanco followed with his second hit of the night. A throwing error on Polanco's hit put both runners in scoring position for Jose Osuna. Osuna delivered a two-RBI single, the first of his three hits in the game.

Matt Benedict (L, 0-2) entered in the fourth for Bradenton and was greeted by a solo home run from Anthony Garcia to put the Cardinals back in front 3-2. The Marauders struck back with two down in the fifth, again with two down as Carlos Mesa doubled and Taylor Lewis singled him in. The Cardinals pushed across the decisive run in the fifth with another double by Piscotty, driving in James Ramsey for the second time in the game.

The Marauders threatened throughout the game, stranding runners in almost every inning. The final threat came with two outs in the ninth. Hanson walked against Ronnie Shaban (S, 2), and Gonzalez singled to left on a two strike count. Polanco followed with a slow tapper to second. He beat the throw from Walsh, but Jonathan Rodriguez caught Hanson trying to sneak home on the play.

The teams meet again Friday at 6:30 p.m. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. It is 70's Night at McKechnie Field. Fans are encouraged to dress in 1970's clothing and stay after the game for a concert on the outfield boardwalk by Disco Inferno.
