Redbirds Fall to the Stripers

*GWINNETT COUNTY, Georgia – * For the third straight night, the Gwinnett Stripers (Triple-A affiliate, Atlanta Braves) defeated the Memphis Redbirds on a warm night at Coolray Field. For the second straight night, it was the Stripers’ bats that did the trick. Gwinnett scored 14 runs on 18 hits en route to a 14-2 victory.

The Stripers (12-9) ran away with the game early via an astounding offensive display in the second inning. Gwinnett sent 13 batters to the plate in the inning, rapping out 10 hits on their way to eight runs in the frame. The first 10 batters in the inning reached base – the first seven batters all had hits.

Gwinnett added a lone run in the fourth and five more runs in the fifth. Alex Jackson smacked home runs in each inning. The rehabbing big leaguer finished the game 4-4 with three home runs and seven RBIs. He hit a grand slam in the fifth inning.

Not be outdone, the pitching for the Stripers was excellent, holding the Redbirds to five hits for the entire game. Kyle Muller was particularly sharp in his start, allowing just one run on three hits in five innings. He struck out eight Memphis batters (seven on swinging strikeouts) and didn’t walk anybody.

Memphis scored its runs on a pair of solo home runs. José Rondón smacked one in the fourth, while Matt Szczur hit one in the sixth. Rondón has home runs in back-to-back games, and leads the ‘Birds with 19 RBIs.

The Memphis Redbirds are the proud Triple-A Affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals.
