MEMPHIS, TN – The Memphis Redbirds continued their winning ways in game one of a six-game series over the Gwinnett Stripers on Tuesday night by a final score of 8-2.
The Memphis offense continued to produce away from AutoZone Park. The Redbirds scored runs in each of the first four frames on their way to a league-leading 14th road win.
In the top of the first, shortstop Paul DeJong drove in second baseman Kramer Robertson with a sacrifice fly to the warning track in center field.
An inning later, the bottom of the order rallied for three more runs. Following a right fielder Connor Capel leadoff single, catcher Ivan Herrera ripped an RBI double to extend his hitting streak to five games. Two batters later, center fielder Ben DeLuzio brought home Herrera with an RBI groundout.
From then on, it was a story of two-out production. On the game, Memphis totaled six two-out hits. In the third, Capel extended the frame with a bunt single against the shift. Herrera smacked his second RBI double of the game on the very next pitch to put the Redbirds up 5-0.
Until Tuesday night, Memphis had hit back-to-back home runs once this season, most recently on April 16 at Charlotte. With two outs and no one on in the fourth, Robertson golfed his fourth homer of the season. Three pitches later, designated hitter Nolan Gorman extended his Triple-A lead in home runs with his 15th of 2022 and 11th solo shot.
On the pitching side, right-handed starter Johan Oviedo was brilliant. Oviedo tied a season high in innings pitched, going seven strong innings. The right-hander allowed one run on four hits to go along with six strikeouts.
The Memphis Redbirds (21-16) return to Coolray Field for the fifth game of a six-game series against the Gwinnett Stripers (17-20) on Wednesday, May 18 for a 6:05 p.m. CDT first pitch.
