MEMPHIS, Tennessee - The first-place Memphis Redbirds (74-48) scored six runs on 11 hits Wednesday night at AutoZone Park, but they were undone by the long ball and the free pass in a 10-6 loss to the New Orleans Baby Cakes (Marlins).
New Orleans hit three home runs, including a grand slam by former Redbird Jonathan Rodriguez and two two-run shots, and Redbird pitching walked seven in the game.
Carson Kelly was on base five times with two singles, two hit-by-pitches, and a walk, and Tommy Edman was 2-for-5 with a home run. Alex Mejia, who entered the game as a pinch-runner and defensive replacement after Rangel Ravelo was hit by a pitch and left the game, finished 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
Connor Jones started and allowed four runs on just two hits in 3.0 innings, and he walked six. Rehabbing Dominic Leone took the loss after allowing the grand slam to Rodriguez in the fifth inning. Landon Beck was solid out of the bullpen, allowing just one hit in 3.0 shutout innings.
Wilfredo Tovar stole his 11th base of the season in the game.
