Redbirds six-game winning streak snapped by Stripers 

MEMPHIS, TN – For the first time in eight days, the Memphis Redbirds dropped game two of a six-game series to the Gwinnett Stripers on Wednesday night by a final score of 4-3.

With Memphis down 3-0 and two outs in the top of the sixth inning, left fielder Alec Burleson came to the plate looking to do damage. The left-handed hitter blasted a pitch to dead center field, tying the game with a three-run homer. The home run was Burleson’s seventh of the season and brought his RBI total to 25, the highest mark of any active Redbird batter.

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh against Memphis reliever James Naile, Gwinnett registered three consecutive singles to regain a 4-3 lead.

In the top of the ninth, designated hitter Lars Nootbaar led off the inning with a line drive into the right field corner for a double. Nootbaar advanced to third on a Burleson flyout but was doubled off to end the game on a first baseman Luken Baker lineout.

Stripers starter Bryce Elder set a new career high in strikeouts on Wednesday night, sending down 11 Redbirds across seven innings en route to his first win of the season.

The Memphis Redbirds (21-17) return to Coolray Field for the third game of a six-game series against the Gwinnett Stripers (18-20) on Thursday, May 19 for a 6:05 p.m. CDT first pitch.
