Sunday's game at Dr Pepper Ballpark in Frisco was decided on an "either or" play in the seventh inning.
With the game tied at 2-2, Frisco had the bases loaded with one out. Chuck Moorman sent a sharp one-hoper to shortstop, a potential (albeit difficult) double play chance. Instead of an inning-ending 6-4-3, the ball kicked off Richie Martin's glove and two runs scored, giving Frisco a 4-2 lead that would hold up the rest of the way.
Tyler Ramirez' RBI double in the top of the fourth game the 'Hounds a 1-0 lead but the Riders rallied back for two runs in the home half of the inning. Sean Murphy's fourth RBI in the first two games of the series tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth before the game turned on the pivotal play in the stretch inning.
Jeffrey Springs (see below) faced seven batters and struck out six of them over two innings (seventh and eighth) for the win and Reed Garrett, while allowing a one-out single to Eli White in the ninth, closed the door for his fifth save in as many opportunities.
Offense was a somewhat rare commodity Sunday, with a combined total of just nine hits. Frisco's Michael O'Neill was the only batter to collect two safeties. The Riders center fielder drove in one run and later scored the tie-breaking run in the seventh. He also stole his 15th base of the season (in 17 attempts).
The RoughRiders evened the four-game series at a game apiece with a win that marked only the third time in 10 games between the clubs in 2018 in which the home team has come out on top.
Notables
Sean Murphy (1-for-4, RBI) has reached base in nine straight games (.371) with one HR and 10 RBI.
Since breaking out of a 4-for-40 (.100 in nine games) stretch, Tyler Ramirez (1-for-3, double, RBI, walk) as now hit in four straight games. Correcting Tyler's numbers in the four games: 7-for-16 (.438) with three runs, two doubles, a triple and four RBI.
Eli White (1-for-4) has reached base in 15 straight games (.373, hits in 13 of the 15) with six doubles, two triples, one HR and 10 RBI.
Frisco reliever Jeffrey Springs has now struck out 64 batters in 35-and-a-third innings, averaging a league-best (by leaps and bounds) more than SIXTEEN K's per nine innings pitched (16.30 to be exact).
Richie Martin failed to reach base for just the second time in 18 games and Seth Brown was kept off base for the third time in his last 25 (both went 0-for-4).
