A game highlighted by "big flies and double plays" ended on a web gem as the RockHounds defeated the RoughRiders, 6-4, Saturday night at Dr Pepper Ballpark in Frisco.
Frisco took an early 3-0 lead on Jose Cardona's solo home run (on the first pitch of the last of the first inning) and Preston Beck's two-run homer in the second.
Tyler Ramirez tripled in the fourth and scored on a single up the middle, the first of Sean Murphy's three RBI. "Murph" then brought the 'Hounds within a run at 3-2 with a 424-foot line drive home run to left center on an 0-2 pitch in the sixth, only to see Frisco's Juremi Profar answer with a laser of his own (also on an 0-2 pitch) in the home half of the frame.
The 'Hounds tied the game at 4-4 in seventh with Edwin Diaz' single and Brett Vertigan's double setting the table and RBI from Richie Martin (ground out) and Tyler Ramirez (single) bringing home the runs.
Consecutive singles from Tyler Marincov, Mike White and Brett Siddall (RBI) broke the tie in the eighth and Murphy's third ribbie of the game brought Ramirez home with an insurance run in the ninth.
Nolan Blackwood entered the game in the eighth and struck Profar out to end a Frisco threat. He gave up a one-out single to Luis Yander La O in the ninth and a wild pitch pushed the runner into scoring position with the tying run at the plate.
There were five double plays in the game, the last coming on a brilliant … and a game-ending … play from Martin. Michael De Leon ripped a pitch up the middle, with the RockHounds shortstop making a leaping catch, then throwing back to White at second to get La O to end the game.
The RockHounds out-hit the Riders, 16-7, but Frisco turned three double plays, two of them in the early going with two men on (each ended an inning and a RockHounds threat).
Notables
Sean Murphy (3-for-5, HR, three RBI) has reached base in eight straight games (.387) with one HR and nine RBI. The first two of his RBI hits Saturday night - - a single up the middle in the fourth and a line drive home run covering 424 feet to left center in the sixth … each came on an 0-2 pitch.
Entering Friday's series finale at San Antonio, Tyler Ramirez was mired in a 4-for-40 (.100) slump over nine games. Including Saturday's 3-for-5 (two runs, triple, RBI), Tyler is now 5-for-9 in his last two games, with three runs, a double, a triple and two RBI.
Richie Martin (1-5) has reached base in 16-of-his-last-17 games (.406) and is hitting .387 in his last 27 games.
Seth Brown (1-5) has hits in 13-of-15 games (.323, 15 RBI) and has reached base in 22-of-24 games (.295, 23 RBI).
In his first two games at the Double-A level, Edwin Diaz is 3-for-7 with two double and a walk.
With a little help from the web-gem ending Saturday, Nolan Blackwood has allowed one run in his last 15 appearances. Since seeing his ERA balloon to 8.59 on April 27, the 'Hounds reliever has only the single run over his last 20.0 innings (0.45), lowering his ERA to 2.63.
