COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.-
Cole Gillespie tripled twice, and Wily Mo Peña hit his third home run in as many days, as the Reno Aces won their third-straight game Monday night, 9-1, over the Colorado Springs Sky Sox at Security Service Field.
Reno jumped ahead early with a six-run second inning and never looked back in the series opener. The Aces brought 11 men to the plate in that second frame-highlighted by a three-run blast off the bat of Peña, his third of the season.
The Aces banged out 12 hits on the night, with four players recording a multi-hit effort. Tony Abreu finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Gillespie tripled twice, drove in a run and scored twice. Peña homered, singled and drove in three, and Josh Wilson collected two hits for the second-straight game.
Matt Torra (1-0) earned the victory Monday, scattering a run on five hits over 6.0 innings of work. Torra struck out two and didn't walk a batter. Daniel Stange tossed two scoreless frames, and Esmerling Vasquez ended the proceedings with a perfect ninth inning.
Sky Sox starter Josh Muecke (0-1) was chased after allowing six unearned runs over two innings of work and was pinned with the loss. Four Colorado Springs relievers combined to hold Reno to three runs on eight hits over the final seven frames.
The Aces and Sky Sox lock horns again on Tuesday at Spring Mobile Ballpark. RHP Micah Owings (0-0, No ERA) makes his Aces debut, while the Sky Sox will counter with RHP John Maine (0-0, 12.00 ERA).
