Adams leads Scottsdale surge in Mesa

Yankees prospect David Adams drove in a pair of runs on two doubles and veteran right-hander Bobby Cassevah (Angels) allowed one hit in four shutout innings as the Scorpions topped Mesa, 8-3, on Thursday. Tyler Holt (Indians) also drove in two runs with a single in the second, while No. 7 Angels prospect Travis Witherspoon launched a solo homer and Alex Monsalve (Indians) and Ricky Oropesa (Giants) each scored twice in Scottsdale's most successful offensive performance of the season. A solo homer by third-ranked Orioles prospect Jonathan Schoop in the fifth providing the Solar Sox's only scoring until the bottom of the ninth, when Mesa plated two unearned runs on a wild pitch and a fielding error. Peoria 3, Salt River 1

Padres southpaw Robbie Erlin tossed 2 2/3 scoreless innings and Phillies prospect Cody Asche homered and drove in two runs as the Javelinas edged Salt River, 3-1. Erlin and Michael Tomkin (Twins) held the Rafters scoreless until the sixth when a single by Kent Matthes (Rockies) scored Matthew Skole (Nationals) to tie the game. Asche's solo homer in the seventh gave Peoria the lead, and the third baseman added an insurance run in the ninth, scoring No. 4 Mariners prospect Mike Zunino on a sacrifice fly. Surprise 2, Phoenix 2

No. 9 Brewers prospect Jimmy Nelson tossed four shutout innings, allowing just one hit, and Christian Yelich tripled, doubled and drove in a run for Phoenix as the Desert Dogs and Saguaros played to a tie. Yelich, Miami's top prospect, put Phoenix on the board in the fifth, tripling home Kyle Jensen (Marlins) before scoring on a double by Eduardo Salcedo (Braves). Surprise catcher Christian Vasquez (Red Sox) went 3-for-4 and scored on a Michael Almanzar (Red Sox) groundout in the third. The Saguaros tied the contest in the ninth when Darrell Ceciliani (Mets) came home on a wild pitch, and the game ended in a draw after neither team managed to score in two extra frames.
