Andriese, first-rounders lead Ems

Twenty-seven days ago, Matt Andriese pitched nine shutout innings for UC-Riverside. In his second outing as a pro on Thursday night, he was nearly as good.

The Padres' third-round pick in this month's Draft allowed one run on three hits over six innings as the short-season Eugene Emeralds topped the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, 5-2.

Andriese (1-1) had a tougher time in his debut against Boise on Saturday. He took the loss after giving up three runs on three hits and two walks in four innings.

The 21-year-old was sharp from the outset against the Volcanoes on Thursday, retiring the first six batters before issuing a leadoff walk to Daniel Brock in the third. After four more outs, Daniel Burkhart notched the Volcanoes' first hit with a one-out single in the fourth.

Andriese carried a one-hitter through five innings before Shawn Payne opened the sixth with his first career triple. After Jesus Galindo popped out, first-round pick Joseph Panik drove in the Volcanoes' first run with a single to left. Andriese got Burkhart to ground into a double play, ending the inning and the young pitcher's outing.

Andriese struck out five and walked one en route to his first win. He induced 10 ground-ball outs against just one fly ball. In his two starts, he's allowed six hits (for a .171 average against) while fanning 10 over 10 innings.

The Emeralds gave Andriese a cushion by scoring four runs on six hits in the third. Jeremy Rodriguez kicked things off with a single and, after a pair of groundouts, the Ems rattled off a single, double, walk and three more singles, chasing Volcanoes starter Brandon Allen.

Five different hitters drove in the Emeralds' runs, with 2011 first-rounder Cory Spangenberg going 2-for-3 with a double, two walks, a stolen base and an RBI. Donavan Tate, the third overall pick in the 2009 Draft, tripled, singled and scored twice.

Spangenberg, a second baseman, is batting .389 (7-for-18) with five RBIs and three steals in his seven games as a pro. Add in his Northwest League-leading 12 walks and he has reached base at a .636 clip.

Allen (0-2) took the loss after surrendering four runs on four hits and three walks in 2 2/3 innings.

With a triple and single, Payne had two of the Volcanoes' six hits. Brice Cutspec added a solo shot, his second of the season, in the seventh.

After winning its season-opener at Spokane, Salem-Keizer has dropped six games in a row. Its 7.28 ERA ranks last in the Northwest League by nearly two full runs.
