Andriese's Mission: Posting zeros

Padres prospect has not allowed a run in three of four starts
April 24, 2013

All his career, Matt Andriese has pitched to contact. Factoring in strikeouts has gotten him off to a great start this season in Double-A. On Wednesday, it worked to particularly good effect.

Andriese struck out seven and gave up three hits over six shutout innings as Double-A San Antonio held on to defeat Frisco, 5-3.

The Padres' third-round pick in 2011 walked one batter and hit another while notching his third win of the year for the Missions. Andriese threw 51 of his 80 pitches for strikes, facing four over the minimum.

Andriese has not allowed a run in three of his four starts for the Missions this season. Overall, he is 3-0 with a 0.86 ERA and has struck out 21 batters in 21 Texas League innings.

The California native recorded eight ground-ball outs Wednesday, not an uncommon occurrence. Twenty-eight of the 63 outs he's recorded this season have come on the ground. In 2012, pitching for the Lake Elsinore Storm, his 1.75 groundout-to-airout ratio ranked seventh among all Class A Advanced hurlers.

Jake Blackwood slugged a three-run homer and Rico Noel drove in a run for San Antonio. Everett Willliams extended his hitting streak to 10 games with an RBI single.

After allowing five runs on seven hits over the first three innings, Kevin Pucetas and Jake Brigham did not allow another hit over the final five innings for the RoughRiders.
