Angels' Trout to debut at Double-A
Reagins said it's "unlikely" the outfielder, recently ranked by MLB.com as the No. 1 prospect in baseball, would reach the Majors this season, according to the L.A. Times' Bill Shaikin, who Tweeted the news on Thursday.
"I would say it's unlikely," Reagins told Shakin regarding Trout's potential promotion to Anaheim. Trout will, however, see action with the Angels next month as he was one of 25 non-roster players invited to Major League camp in Spring Training at Tempe, Ariz.
Angels manager Mike Scioscia said last month he wouldn't be shocked to see Trout get called up later in the season, though.
"At some point, if you project where Mike's going to be, I'd be surprised if he's not on our depth chart at some time late in the year," Scioscia told MLB.com. "I'm not saying he's going to get called up. He's obviously opened up a lot of eyes. When he's ready, he'll get an opportunity."
Trout, the Angels' first-round pick in the 2009 Draft, split his first full season between Class A Cedar Rapids and Class A Advanced Rancho Cucamonga last year, batting a combined .341 with 10 homers, 58 RBIs and 56 stolen bases. He had a .454 on-base percentage in the Midwest League and 106 hits in 131 games overall.
He was a Futures Game All-Star last summer before being named a Midwest League midseason and postseason All-Star, the Midwest League's Most Valuable Player and the league's Prospect of the Year. He was also a Topps Class A All-Star and was honored by Baseball America.
"Mike Trout has tremendous upside," Scioscia said. "He can really run, and he can do a lot of things on the field, offensively and defensively. Obviously, we're extremely high on him. He's an exciting player with a tremendous attitude."
The Vineland, N.J., native was the No. 25 overall pick in 2009 and spent his first season between Cedar Rapids and the Angels' Rookie-level Arizona League affiliate.
Joining Trout at big league camp this month are right-handers Ryan Brasier, Ryan Braun, Ryan Chaffee, Tyler Chatwood, Eric Junge, Garrett Richards and southpaws Matt Meyer, Trevor Reckling and Andrew Taylor.
The catchers are Anel De Los Santos, Jose Jimenez, Carlos Ramirez, Kevin Richardson and Alberto Rosario. Infielders Alexi Amarista, Gabe Jacobo, Kevin Melillo, Efren Navarro, Darwin Perez, Jean Segura and Gil Velasquez and outfielders Tyson Auer, Angel Castillo and Travis Witherspoon round out the group of 25 invitees.
