Arcia and Cohoon Win Weekly Awards

PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the period of August 6th through August 12th:

New Britain Rock Cats outfielder Oswaldo Arcia has been selected as the Eastern League Player of the Week for the period of August 6th-August 12th. The 21-year old batted .455 (10-for-22) with five doubles, two home runs, 11 RBI, four runs scored, six walks and a .955 slugging percentage in seven games for the Rock Cats last week. Arcia, who is a native of Anaco, Venezuela, had at least one hit in every game he played in last week and drove in or scored at least one run in six games, including going 3-for-3 with one double, one home run, four RBI and two walks in a 10-6 win over the visiting Reading Phillies on Saturday night. The 6'0", 210 lb. slugger led all Eastern League players in OPS (1.488) and slugging percentage (.955) last week and also finished ranked among the weekly league leaders in RBI (11-tied 1st), total bases (21-tied 1st), walks (6-tied 1st), extra-base hits (7-2nd), on-base percentage (.591-2nd), batting average (.455-3rd), doubles (5-3rd), hits (10-tied 3rd) and home runs (2-tied 3rd). Oswaldo, who was selected as the Eastern League Player of the Month in July after batting .354 with a league-high 25 RBI in 26 games during the month, was signed by the Minnesota Twins as a non-drafted free agent on July 4, 2007.

Mark Cohoon, a left-handed starting pitcher for the Binghamton Mets, has been selected as the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of August 6th-August 12th. The 6'2", 195 lb. hurler started one game for the B-Mets last week and had a record of 1-0 with 10 strikeouts and a 0.00 ERA. Cohoon, who is a native of Burleson, Texas, made his lone appearance of the week on Friday night at Harrisburg and struck out a season-high 10 batters while throwing a complete game shutout in a 5-0 victory for the B-Mets. He retired the first 11 batters he faced and took a no-hitter into the seventh inning while surrendering just two hits and one walk. Mark also contributed to the win at the plate, going 1-for-1 with one RBI and three sacrifice bunts in four plate appearances. The 23-year old was ranked among the weekly league leaders in ERA (0.00-tied 1st), complete games (1-tied 1st), shutouts (1-tied 1st), WHIP (0.33-2nd), wins (1-tied 2nd), batting average against (.069-3rd) and innings pitched (9.0-tied 9th). Mark, who has a record of 7-8 with 68 strikeouts and a 3.44 ERA in 19 starts for the B-Mets this season, was selected by the New York Mets in the 12th round of the 2008 draft after spending two seasons at North Central Texas College.
