Arroyo, Spivey highlight NWL All-Stars

Volcanoes, Indians infielders headed to game in Eugene on Aug. 6
July 24, 2014

If you were worried that baseball's All-Star festivities came to a close last week, you're in luck.

The Northwest League have announced the North and South Division All-Star rosters on Wednesday ahead of the Class A Short Season circuit's All-Star Game on Aug. 6 in Eugene.

The most prominent name of the bunch might be Salem-Keizer shortstop Christian Arroyo, who checks in as the Giants' No. 5 prospect according to MLB.com. Selected 25th overall by San Francisco in 2013, the 19-year-old shortstop started the season at Class A Augusta but struggled against competition that is, on average, 2 1/2 years older than him, batting .204 in 31 games. He has since found his footing in the Northwest League, putting up a .317/.370/.423 slash line with two homers and 19 RBIs in 30 games with the Volcanoes. He will start for the South Division in two weeks.

This will be the second straight season in which Arroyo has been an All-Star. He was named an Arizona League postseason All-Star after leading the circuit in slugging percentage (.511), doubles (18), RBIs (39) and runs (47) to go with a .326 average last season.

Most of the Northwest League category leaders will join Arroyo in Eugene, although the majority of them will be on the other side.

Spokane second baseman Seth Spivey has received a starting nod for the North Division side, thanks to his NWL-best .365 average. He'll be joined in the same infield by teammate and third baseman Jose Trevino, whose eight home runs are tops in the circuit. (Zach Cone is tied with Trevino with eight long balls but was promoted to Class A Hickory on Thursday.)

Stolen-base leader and Vancouver center fielder Roemon Fields (28 steals) will be one of the intriguing stories at the showcase, given his origin story. He went from a Kansas junior college player to a Seattle post office worker to a Blue Jays prospect.

On the pitching side, the North Division boasts ERA leader Helmis Rodriguez of Tri-City (2.01 ERA) while the South will have strikeout leader Ben Eckels of Hilsboro (52) and WHIP leader Jose Reyes of Salem-Keizer (0.91).
