Barons' Doyle tosses three-hitter

White Sox prospect Terry Doyle turned in the best outing of his four-year pro career Sunday to help Double-A Birmingham to its fourth win in five games.

The right-hander scattered three hits and two walks while striking out four over nine scoreless innings for his first career shutout in the Barons' 6-0 blanking of the Tennessee Smokies.

Selected by the Chicago White Sox in the 37th round of the 2008 Draft, Doyle allowed a one-out double to Matt Camp in the first inning, a leadoff single to Steve Clevenger in the fifth and a two-out double to Clevenger in the seventh. The 25-year-old retired eight batters in a row in the middle of the game and he did not allow a runner to reach third.

The shutout lowered the Boston College product's ERA from 4.00 to 2.67 and helped him improve to 2-2 in four Southern League outings for the White Sox affiliate.

Doyle threw his only other complete game in the second half of a doubleheader for the Winston-Salem Dash against the Potomac Nationals in a 3-2 loss on April 13. He allowed three runs on eight hits over six innings in the defeat.

Before his callup to Birmingham, the Massachusetts native went 1-5 with a 2.84 ERA over 11 starts with the Dash. Last year, he was 12-10 with a 2.94 ERA and 157 strikeouts over 168 1/3 innings between Winston-Salem and Class A Kannapolis.

On Sunday, first baseman Seth Loman went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI and right fielder Kenneth Williams, selected in the sixth round of the '08 Draft, plated a pair of runs in the victory.
