Bats Stay Cold on Opening Night

LumberKings manage just a run against Jayson Miller, Cedar Rapids
April 14, 2009

Clinton, IA - A run on six hits was all the Clinton LumberKings could muster against left-hander Jayson Miller and three relievers as the Cedar Rapids Kernels claimed the 2009 Home Opener with a 4-1 win Tuesday night.

Miller (W, 1-0) scattered five hits over 6.0 innings, yielding only an RBI double to Nate Tenbrink in the fourth. Tenbrink's double drove home Terry Serrano, who had reached on Clinton's first hit just two batters earlier.

LumberKings' starter Kenn Kasparek struck out five over the first 2.2 innings, but hit the wall with two outs in the third. Alexi Amarista laced a double over the head of Gavin Dickey in left. Hector Estrella singled him home and moved to third on a throwing error by center-fielder Maximo Mendez. Gabe Jacobo followed with a double just inside the left-field line to give the Kernels a 2-0 lead. A pair of wild pitches later sent Jacobo home.

Kasparek (L, 0-1) allowed three earned runs on five hits over 3.0 innings. Prior to his start, the Clinton starting rotation had been 3-0 with a 0.53 ERA.

The Kernels added a run against left-hander Bobby LaFromboise in the eighth inning. Angel Castillo lined a double off the wood wall in center, plating Carlos Colmenares.

Tenbrink paced the offense for the LumberKings, going 2-for-4 with his first RBI. Mendez saw his three-game multi-hit streak come to an end, going 0-for-4 in the leadoff spot.

Castillo and Matt Crawford each went 2-for-4 for the Kernels.

The LumberKings (3-1) and Kernels (4-0) will make up Monday night's postponed game with a double-header tomorrow, starting at 6:00 PM. Listen to the games on AM 1390 KCLN in Clinton or live on the web at www.lumberkings.com and www.kcln.com.
