BILOXI, Miss. (August 15, 2019) - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels, dropped both games of Thursday's doubleheader 3-2 and 7-3 to the Biloxi Shuckers at MGM Park.
GAME ONE:
The BayBears took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third after falling behind on a Jake Gatewood home run in the second. Roberto Baldoquin and Bo Way drove in runs as Mobile collected four consecutive two-out singles to jump in front.
Greg Mahle gave up two runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings after tossing a complete-game shutout last Thursday against Pensacola. He came just one out shy of a quality start, but Brett Hanewich (0-5) got the BayBears out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth with a strikeout.
However, the first two batters reached for Biloxi in the bottom of the seventh, and Weston Wilson drove in the game-winning run with a single to left field. It was Mobile's 12th loss of the season in walk-off fashion.
Rodrigo Benoit (1-0) earned the win for the Shuckers with a hitless top of the seventh.
GAME TWO:
A five-run Biloxi (75-47 overall, 34-18 second half) first inning and three Mobile errors cost the BayBears (43-76, 16-35) a chance at a victory in the second game of the doubleheader. Luis Madero (4-10) gave up five runs, two earned, on four hits and lasted just two innings.
After recording two hits in the first game, Way slugged solo home runs in the third and seventh in game two. It was the first multi-homer game of his career, and he has set a new career-high with six home runs this season.
Clayton Andrews (1-0) allowed just two hits out of the bullpen to pick up the win for Biloxi.
The BayBears continue the five-game road series against Biloxi Friday at 6:35 p.m. Right-handed pitcher Andrew Wantz (0-4, 5.57 ERA) is scheduled to make the start against righty Drew Rasmussen (1-3, 4.14 ERA) for the Shuckers. Live coverage can be seen on MiLB.tv (Biloxi feed, subscription required, promo code: BAYBEARS) and heard on MobileBayBears.com, the TuneIn app, and the MiLB First Pitch app, with the Countdown to First Pitch starting at 6:15 p.m.
