MOBILE, Ala. (April 19, 2019) - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels, split a doubleheader with the Montgomery Biscuits Friday night at Hank Aaron Stadium, winning the first game 2-1 and falling 10-1 in the finale.
Adrian De Horta struck out a career-high 10 batters in four scoreless innings. He allowed just two hits and pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the third. Montgomery left eight on base in the game and went just 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position.
Brandon Sandoval and Connor Justus both had two-hit games and led the BayBears at the plate against Josh Fleming (1-1). Sandoval scored both runs, crossing home on an Erick Salcedo sacrifice fly in the third and a Justus single in the fourth.
Joe Gatto (2-0) gave up one run on three hits in two frames of relief and earned his second win. Ryan Clark gave up a pair of hits and walked a batter in the top of the seventh, but he got out of inning unscathed to record his second save.
After a pair of scoreless innings, the BayBears (6-8) ran into trouble in the third and fourth. Montgomery (8-6) scored four runs on one hit and four walks in the third inning, and the Biscuits piled on six more runs in the top of the fourth.
Patrick Sandoval (0-2) lasted just 2 1/3 innings and gave up four runs, three earned, despite not allowing a hit. Sandoval and Dario Beltre both walked three batters, and they combined to walk three with the bases loaded.
Tyler Zombro and Kenny Rosenberg (1-0) retired the first 10 Mobile batters, but the BayBears got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Jhoan Urena plated Jahmai Jones with a double to the left field corner. Jones hit safely in all five games of the series, and he now has a hit in seven of the last eight games after five straight hitless games to open the season.
The BayBears begin a five-game road series against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos Saturday at 6:05 p.m. Right-handed pitcher Matt Ball (0-0, 1.93 ERA) is scheduled to make the start against righty Jorge Alcala (3-0, 2.30 ERA) for the Blue Wahoos.
