BayBears sweep doubleheader against Braves

Shutout win in game one, walk-off win in game two

MOBILE, Ala. (July 31, 2017) - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, won both games of a doubleheader Monday night against the Mississippi Braves at Hank Aaron Stadium.
GAME 1:
The BayBears broke a scoreless tie with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to win the first game 2-0.
With a runner on second base and two outs in the frame, Michael Hermosillo hit a ground ball to third base that was misplayed by Austin Riley, allowing Francisco Arcia to score. Hermosillo scored later in the inning on Jose Rojas ' RBI single.
Jake Jewell (6-8) pitched the second seven-inning complete game shutout of the year for the BayBears. Jewell allowed just three scattered singles and one walk, while striking out seven batters.
Touki Toussaint (0-1) took the loss in his Double-A debut, despite retiring 15 of the first 16 batters. Both Mobile runs in the sixth inning were unearned. Toussaint gave up just four hits, walked two batters, and struck out four.
GAME 2:
Matt Thaiss drove in the winning run for the BayBears (48-58 overall, 18-19 second half) with a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th inning.
With the game tied 3-3, the BayBears loaded the bases with one out. After a Hermosillo strikeout, Thaiss delivered the game-winning hit, a single to left field to score Josè Briceño .
The BayBears left 14 runners on base and went just 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position, but they still managed to rally for the victory. Mississippi took an early 2-0 lead, Mobile responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second.
The Braves (46-61, 12-25) grabbed the edge back with a Jared James RBI infield single in the top of the ninth, but the BayBears responded again in the bottom of the frame. Zach Houchins plated Troy Montgomery to tie the game 3-3.
The BayBears continue the six-game home series against Mississippi Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. CT. Right-handed pitcher Tyler Carpenter (2-5, 4.50 ERA) is scheduled to make the start for Mobile against southpaw Max Fried (2-11, 6.21 ERA) for Mississippi.
