BayBears sweep doubleheader against Pensacola

Eight-run fourth inning in game one, four-run third in game two

MOBILE, Ala. (April 8, 2018) - The Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels, won both games of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos at Hank Aaron Stadium.
GAME 1:
After grabbing a 1-0 lead through three innings, the BayBears plated eight runs in the bottom of the fourth to put the game out of reach for a 9-0 shutout win.
Hutton Moyer scored the first run of the frame on a wild pitch, and Zach Gibbons followed with an RBI single. Matt Thaiss broke the game open with a three-run double and scored on a Taylor Ward double. Moyer capped off the inning with a two-run homer to right field, his second of the series. It was the first eight-run inning for a Mobile squad since May 12, 2014.
Jose Rodriguez (1-0) earned the win, tossing five scoreless innings in his Double-A debut. He only allowed two hits.
Cuban prospect Vladimir Gutierrez (0-1) lasted just 3 2/3 innings in his first start at the Double-A level. He gave up six runs, four earned, and issued five walks.
GAME 2:
A four-run third inning helped lead the BayBears to a 4-3 victory over the Blue Wahoos (1-3).
Trailing 2-0 early, Brendon Sanger and Ward both hit RBI doubles to tie the game. Wade Wass plated a pair of runs with his first hit of the year, a single to center field that put Mobile (3-1) in front for good.
Pensacola pulled within one in the fifth, courtesy of Shed Long's second double of the game. However, Greg Mahle (1-0) and Jake Jewell combined for 2 2/3 scoreless innings to preserve the lead. Mahle got the BayBears out of a jam by inducing an inning-end double play and then working around a pair of singles in the sixth. Jewell retired the side in order in the final frame with two strikeouts for his first save since May 26, 2015.
Ward recorded his fourth straight multi-game and is now 9-for-15 to start the season.
Ivan Pineyro lasted 4 1/3 innings in his Angels organization debut, giving up a pair of earned runs on five hits. Jesús Reyes (0-1) was knocked out of the game after 2 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on six hits.
The BayBears wrap up the five-game home series against Pensacola Monday at 6:35 p.m. CDT. Right-handed pitcher Dylan Unsworth (0-0, -.-- ERA) is scheduled to make the start against righty Wyatt Strahan (0-0, -.-- ERA) for the Blue Wahoos.
