Bayne fires seven one-hit frames

Winston-Salem's Cameron Bayne made his Class A Advanced debut one to remember on Monday night, taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning as the Dash topped the host Potomac Nationals, 7-5.

The 23-year-old Bayne went 12-9 with a 3.60 ERA in 27 games for Kannapolis, the White Sox's Class A affiliate, last season. He finished the campaign with a flourish, winning his last six decisions.

Bayne picked up right where he left off in his first Carolina League start. The right-hander retired the first four batters he faced before issuing a walk to Potomac left fielder Destin Hood. Bayne then set down the next 16 P-Nats in order, until J.P. Ramirez drew a walk with two outs in the seventh. Hood then broke up the no-hit bid with a double to left, but Bayne ended the threat by fanning Steven Souza.

A 13th-round pick in the 2009 Draft, Bayne (1-0) earned the win after allowing one hit and a pair of walks while striking out three over seven frames. He threw 83 pitches -- 50 of them for strikes -- and recorded 13 ground-ball outs. The Hawaii native went to a three-ball count against just five of the 24 batters he faced.

Bayne exited the game with Winston-Salem holding a 2-0 lead on the strength of an RBI double by Kyle Davis in the third inning and Kyle Shelton's solo homer in the seventh.

Potomac got a fine outing from starter Marcos Frias (0-1), who took the loss despite allowing just one run on four hits over six solid frames.

Neither club's relievers were able to match their starters' performances. Winston-Salem scored three runs in the eighth and a pair in the ninth, while Potomac attempted to rally with four in the eighth and another run in the final frame.

The P-Nats brought the winning run to the plate with two outs in the ninth, but Dash closer Brandon Kloess fanned Eury Perez with men on the corners to seal the team's third straight win.

Each Dash batter collected at least one hit in the game. Designated hitter Ian Gac doubled and drove in a pair of runs. He leads Winston-Salem with six RBIs in four games.

Rick Hague, the Nationals' third-round pick last June, hit his first homer of the season, a two-run shot in the eighth. Hood collected two doubles.
