Baysox Sweep Senators
Washington Nationals left-hander Ross Detwiler started the game for the Senators on a Major League Rehab assignment. Detwiler retired the first eight Baysox he faced before Carlos Rojas singled to left field with two outs in the bottom of the third inning. Detwiler struck out center fielder Danny Figueroa to end the inning.
Baysox starter Chorye Spoone matched Detwiler pitch-for-pitch, holding the Senators scoreless through his first five innings of work. The Pasadena, Md. native would not record a decision, despite holding Harrisburg to two runs on seven hits and two walks through seven innings. Spoone struck out seven batters, tying his season high in his sixth consecutive quality start.
The Baysox finally broke through against Detwiler in the top of the fourth inning. Second baseman Ryan Adams led off with a double to center field and third baseman Joel Guzman drew a one-out walk to put runners on first and second. First baseman Robbie Widlansky hit a ground ball to second base, but the Senators were not able to turn a double play, and the Baysox had runners on the corners with two outs. Left fielder Tyler Henson drove Adams in with a single to right field to put the Baysox up 1-0 and designated hitter Steve Lerud followed with an infield single to third base to load the bases. The Senators went to the bullpen, bringing in lefty Junior Novoa. Novoa faced one batter in the game, forcing left fielder Jonathan Tucker to ground out to shortstop to end the inning.
The Senators brought in a third pitcher to open the fifth inning, turning the game over to Pasadena, Md. native Jason Jones. Figueroa hit a one-out double to right field off Jones and scored on a two-out single by Caleb Joseph to put the Baysox up 2-0.
Harrisburg finally scored in the top of the sixth inning when Marvin Lowrance hit a two-out solo home run to right field to cut the lead to 2-1. It was the first run Spoone allowed in his last 15.1 innings.
The Baysox right-hander found himself in a jam in the bottom of the seventh inning. He walked Edgardo Baez to open the inning and allowed a single to Tim Pahuta to put runners on first and second with nobody out. After a sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third, Brad Coon tied the game at 2-2 with a groundout to shortstop before Spoone induced another groundout to end the inning.
Bowie had an opportunity to take the lead in the top of the eighth inning. With two outs and Lerud on first base, Tucker lifted a ball down the right field line. Edgardo Baez made a diving grab to end the inning, robbing Tucker of an extra-base hit and a potential RBI.
Right-hander Pat Egan relieved Spoone to start the bottom of the eighth inning and held the Senators scoreless in his first inning of work. The Senators went to the bullpen for their fifth pitcher of the game in the top of the ninth inning, turning the game over to right-hander Zech Zincola.
Rojas drew a walk to open the ninth inning against Zincola, reaching base for the third time of the game. With Figueroa batting, Zincola attempted to pick Rojas off at first base. The throw wound up in right field and Rojas advanced to second base on the error. Figueroa executed a sacrifice bunt to move Roas to third with one out, and the shortstop scampered home on a wild pitch with Ryan Adams batting to put the Baysox up 3-2.
In the bottom of the inning, Egan slammed the door shut on the Senators with three harmless groundouts. The lanky righty faced seven total batters and recorded six groundouts in two hitless innings. The two Baysox pitchers combined to record 17 groundouts to two flyouts.
After an off day Monday, he Baysox return to Bowie Tuesday, June 15, for a six-game home stand against the Reading Phillies and the Senators.
Those series include some of the Baysox best events of 2010, including the Brad Bergesen bobblehead giveaway on Thursday, June 17. Bergesen was the Eastern League Pitcher of the Year in 2008, winning 15 games for the Baysox before starting 19 games in Baltimore in 2009, with a 3.43 ERA. The first 1,000 fans ages three and up receive the bobblehead in his likeness, presented by Optima Services.
The Baysox host a camp-out on the outfield for Boy Scouts on Friday, June 18, and a Father's Day barbecue with the opportunity to play catch on the outfield on Sunday, June 20. Sunday's game also gives fans ages 18 and up a chance to win a big screen TV in the Miss Utility Diamond Dig.
The club holds its ninth annual Tribute to the Negro Leagues on Saturday, June 19, with former Negro League players available for autographs and pre-game ceremonies honoring the players who endured the color barrier in baseball.
