Big first inning leads to 5-1 win

June 15, 2009
Norfolk plated four first inning runs en route to a 5-1 win over Louisville Monday night.

Jeff Fiorentino doubled home Joey Gathright to open the scoring, and Jolbert Cabrera followed with an RBI groundout to score Justin Christian. Melvin Dorta then followed with a two-run homer off of Ben Jukich (4-3) to give the Tides the early 4-0 lead.

Norfolk starter David Pauley (5-4) made the early lead stand up, as he yielded just one run on five hits in five innings of work. Pauley walked one and struck out six, helping the Tides improve to 5-0 against Louisville this season.

Chris Waters, Chris Ray and Bob McCrory followed Pauley with four innings of shutout relief.

Gathright paced Norfolk's 10-hit attack with three hits, while Fiorentino and Dorta each added two hits apiece.

Norfolk and Louisville will square off again Tuesday night, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05. Troy Patton, just promoted from Double-A Bowie, is slated to make his Tides debut Tuesday.
