Bigley and Pettibone Win Weekly Awards

PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the period of June 18th through June 24th:

New Britain Rock Cats outfielder Evan Bigley has been selected as the Eastern League Player of the Week for the period of June 18th-June 24th. The 25-year old batted .583 (14-for-24) with four doubles, two home runs, 10 RBI, seven runs scored and a 1.000 slugging percentage in six games for the Rock Cats last week. Bigley, who is a native of Combine, Texas, reached base and drove in or scored at least one run in all six games he played in last week and had four multiple hit games, including going 4-for-5 with a double, a home run, three RBI and two runs scored in a 9-8 win on Friday night at Richmond. The 6'1", 200 lb. slugger led all Eastern League players in batting average (.583), RBI (10), hits (14), extra-base hits (6), total bases (24), slugging percentage (1.000) and OPS (1.600) last week. He also finished ranked among the weekly leaders in on-base percentage (.600-2nd), doubles (4-tied 3rd), runs scored (7-tied 4th) and home runs (2-tied 6th). Evan, who is batting .265 with 16 doubles, nine homers and 48 RBI in 68 games for the Rock Cats this season, was selected by the Minnesota Twins in the 10th round of the 2008 draft after hitting .333 (83-for-249) with 20 doubles, 13 homers, 58 RBI and 55 runs scored during his junior season at Dallas Baptist University.

Jonathan Pettibone, a right-handed starting pitcher for the Reading Phillies, has been selected as the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of June 18th-June 24th. The 21-year old started two games for the R-Phils last week and had a record of 1-0 with 15 strikeouts and a 1.29 ERA. Pettibone, who is a native of Yorba Linda, California, made his first appearance of the week on Monday morning against the visiting Akron Aeros and gave up two runs, one earned, on four hits and two walks while striking out eight over seven plus innings. He was in line for the win when he left the game in the top of the eighth inning but wound up with a no-decision in Reading's 4-3, 10-inning victory. In his second start of the week the 6'5", 200 lb. hurler threw a complete game to lead Reading to a 3-1 win at Bowie in the opening game of a doubleheader. He struck out seven and walked two while giving up one run on three hits over seven innings to improve his record to 7-5 on the season while lowering his ERA to 3.27. Jonathan, who led all Eastern League pitchers in strikeouts (15) and innings pitched (14.0) last week, was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the third round of the 2008 draft out of Esperanza High School in Anaheim, California.
