Boston adds Escobar, Hembree for Peavy

The Boston Red Sox added a Top 100 prospect in trading away right-hander Jake Peavy on Saturday, acquiring left-hander Edwin Escobar and right-hander Heath Hembree from the San Francisco Giants, MLB.com confirmed.

Escobar is the 75th-best prospect in baseball according to MLB.com and No. 2 prospect in the Giants' system. The southpaw has a 5.11 ERA in 20 starts with Triple-A Fresno this season.

The 22-year-old was a breakout performer in 2013, splitting the year between Class A Advanced San Jose and Double-A Richmond with a 2.80 ERA and 146 strikeouts in 128 2/3 innings. Escobar represented the Giants on the World team at the 2014 Futures Game in Minnesota.

Escobar was originally signed out of Venezuela by the Texas Rangers in 2008. In 2010, the Giants acquired Escobar in exchange for pitcher Ben Snyder.

Hembree was a teammate of Escobar's in Fresno, where he had a 3.89 ERA in 41 appearances out of the bullpen. A College of Charleston product, Hembree was the No. 11 prospect in San Francisco's farm system.

The 2010 fifth-round pick has reached the upper 90s with his fastball and also throws a slider. The 25-year-old made nine appearances with San Francisco in 2013, posting a 0.00 ERA with 12 strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings.
