Bottom of the Ninth Dooms Auburn

Jamestown, NY - Entering play Monday night, the Auburn Doubledays were 31-0 when leading after eight innings. After Monday, that perfect record is no more. The Jamestown Jammers came from three runs down to defeat Auburn on Monday night 8-7.

With the loss, the Doubledays lead for first place in the Pinckney Division of the New York-Penn League shrunk to two games, with Williamsport defeating Mahoning Valley in extra innings on Monday.

Things started nicely for Auburn in the first inning, scoring five runs on six hits against Jammers' starter Dijai Oliver. Matt Skole and Angelberth Montilla both doubled in the inning for the Doubledays, keying Auburn to the big inning.

Jamestown battled back, though. Two hits and a fielding error by Angelberth Montilla gave the Jammers a run in the first, pulling the Jammers within four. In the third, a two-run home run by Josh Adams helped Jamestown plate three runs, trimming Auburn's lead to just one run.

Leading by a run in the eighth, Auburn added two runs of insurance on a pair of doubles by Justin Miller and Angelberth Montilla, as well as an RBI single by Hendry Jimenez.

The Doubledays led by thee runs heading to the bottom of the ninth. Closer Aaron Barrett came in but struggled to close the door on the Jammers. Barrett loaded the bases with nobody out on a pair of walks and a single. Nestor Castillo drew a bases loaded walk, pulling Jamestown within two runs and placing the tying run at second base. After Ryan Goetz struck out, a wild pitch issued to Austin Barnes got back to the backstop, and two runs came home for Jamestown, tying the game at seven. Barnes popped up to Justin Miller in foul ground, leaving the Doubledays just one out away from sending the game to extra innings.

Unfortunately, Auburn wouldn't get to extras. With Nestor Castillo at third, Brian McConkey singled on a line drive to rightfield, driving in the winning run and capping a come-from-behind effort by the Jammers.
