Brentz and Taillon Win Weekly Awards

PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the period of August 20th through August 26th:

Portland Sea Dogs outfielder Bryce Brentz has been selected as the Eastern League Player of the Week for the period of August 20th-August 26th. The 23-year old batted .536 (15-for-28) with four doubles, two home runs, 10 RBI, five runs scored, one walk, one stolen base and a .893 slugging percentage in six games for the Sea Dogs last week. Brentz, who is a native of Knoxville, Tennessee, had multiple hits in all six games he played in last week and drove in at least one run in five of those games, including going 4-for-5 with a double, two home runs, four RBI and three runs scored in a 7-2 win at New Britain on Wednesday. The 6'0", 190 lb. slugger led all Eastern League players in batting average (.536), hits (15) and RBI (10) last week. He also finished ranked among the weekly league leaders in doubles (4-tied 2nd), on-base percentage (.552-3rd), OPS (1.445-3rd), homers (2-tied 3rd), slugging percentage (.893-4th), extra-base hits (6-5th), total bases (25-5th) and runs scored (5-tied 10th). Bryce, who is hitting .300 (133-for-443) with 30 doubles, 17 home runs, 73 RBI and 60 runs scored in 119 games with the Sea Dogs this season, was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the supplemental first round of the 2010 draft with the 36th overall pick out of Middle Tennessee State University.

Jameson Taillon, a right-handed starting pitcher for the Altoona Curve, has been selected as the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of August 20th-August 26th. The 6'6", 225 lb. hurler started two games for the Curve last week and had a record of 2-0 with 13 strikeouts and a 0.00 ERA. Taillon, who is a native of Winter Haven, Florida, was promoted to Altoona from Class-A Bradenton on August 17th and made his Double-A debut on Tuesday night at Trenton. He struck out six batters and did not issue a walk while surrendering just four hits over five shutout innings to earn the win in a 5-0 Altoona victory. The 20-year old was even more impressive in his second career Double-A start on Sunday against the visiting Richmond Flying Squirrels, giving up only one hit while striking out seven batters over six shutout innings to lead the Curve to a 7-0 win. Taillon led all Eastern League pitchers in wins (2) last week and tied for the lead in ERA (0.00). He also finished among the weekly leaders in WHIP (0.45-2nd), strikeouts (13-tied 3rd) and batting average against (.139-5th). Jameson was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates with the second overall pick in the 2010 draft after going 8-1 with 114 strikeouts and a 1.78 ERA in 62 innings as a senior at The Woodlands High School in Texas.
