Brewers' Delmonico suspended 50 games

Brewers No. 17 prospect Nick Delmonico was suspended for 50 games on Monday after testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug.

The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball said the Brevard County third baseman received a 50-game suspension without pay after testing positive for an amphetamine in violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. The suspension is effective immediately.

The 22-year-old Delmonico is batting .262 with four home runs, 15 RBIs, a pair of steal and a .300 on-base percentage in 37 games this season. The Tennessee native, who began the year ranked by MLB.com as Milwaukee's No. 6 prospect, was originally drafted by the Orioles in the sixth round of the 2012 Draft and was later traded to Milwaukee in exchange for All-Star reliever Francisco Rodriguez last July.

The 6-foot-2 infielder, who bats left and throws right-handed, split last season between Brevard County and the Frederick Keys, Baltimore's Class A Advanced Carolina League affiliate, where he hit a combined .232 with 13 homers, 39 RBIs and a .346 OBP in 82 games. He debuted a year earlier with Class A Delmarva, where he hit .249 with 54 RBIs in 95 games as a South Atlantic League All-Star.

Delmonico is the 38th player to be suspended this year for violating the Minor League drug program.
