Grand Junction, CO - In desperate need of a win, the Brewers offense did not disappoint, as they scored 14 runs combined in the third, fourth, and fifth innings. Pablo Abreu hit a grand slam in the third that gave the Brewers a lead they never surrendered. Helena won 15-7, as a season high in runs helped them snap a season long four game losing streak.
Helena scored in the first for the second straight night, as Brice Turang singled with one out and got to second on a wild pitch. LG Castillo then delivered a single into center field, easily scoring Turang. However, Grand Junction responded with a run in the bottom of the frame to tie. With two out and nobody on, Niko Decolati singled, and then stole two bases. Grant Lavigne was the batter at the plate during the steals, and cashed in with a single to tie the game.
Grand Junction took the lead with a single run in the second, as a two out triple from Zach Hall scored on a single from Cristopher Navarro. The Brewers though punched back with a defining third inning, as the first three in the frame reached on singles. With one out, Pablo Abreu stepped in and launched a rocket to deep left center field, leaving the yard for a grand slam, the first of the season for Helena, giving them a 5-2 lead. Abreu finished with a career best five RBI, making him the second Brewer this season with a five RBI performance.
The Brewers offense didn't stop, as they sent all nine to the plate in the fourth and fifth innings, scoring five runs apiece in each inning. Helena knocked out Grand Junction starter Alejandro Mejia after 3.2 innings, as he surrendered a season high ten runs. Bryan Connell drove in four runs combined in the fourth and fifth innings, while Bryan Torres had an RBI in each of those two frames. Through the top of the fifth inning, the top third of the Brewers order (Je'Von Ward, Brice Turang, and LG Castillo) had reached base in 11 of 12 plate appearances.
Jenri Montas earned the win for the Brewers, as he entered for Max Lazar with two out in the fifth inning. The Helena bullpen combined to give up just one run over 4.1 innings.
Tomorrow the Brewers can earn the series split with a win as they send Justin Bullock to the hill. First pitch is at 5 PM, with the pregame show hitting the airwaves of helenabrewers.net at 4:40.
