Brown homers in three-hit rehab outing

Phillies outfielder plates two runs, scores twice for BlueClaws

Philadelphia outfielder Domonic Brown could rejoin the Phillies for the end of their homestand later this week after a successful first rehab game in the Minors on Monday evening.

Batting third and playing left field, Brown went 3-for-5 with a homer, two RBIs and a pair of runs scored in the Class A Lakewood BlueClaws' 8-4 loss to the host Hagerstown Suns.

"I felt pretty good, no symptoms," All-Star Brown said. "I felt pretty good in the box and was just really trying to see some good pitches up. I had some pretty good swings."

The 25-year-old, who played all nine innings in the field, is expected to suit up for Double-A Reading on Tuesday in Harrisburg before returning to the Phillies on Wednesday for the middle of a three-game set with the Cubs.

"They're telling me to play tomorrow, play nine then back to Philly the next day," said Brown, who said he had been putting in a lot of work in the cage and taking extra reps in the outfield since the injury. "If everything works well tomorrow, then I should be in the lineup Wednesday."

Brown was placed on the seven-day concussion disabled list on July 25, one day after hitting the ground hard diving for a triple by St. Louis' Carlos Beltran. It was initially thought he would only miss a few games, but further tests extended that time frame to 10 or 11 games.

On Monday, Brown -- who has seen time in the Minors in each of the past eight seasons since being drafted in 2006 -- hit an RBI single to left field in the first inning and scored from third base on Art Charles' double to center field.

He homered to right field to lead off the third and singled to right with two outs in the fifth. He grounded out to second base to end the seventh and to shortstop for the final out of the game.

"[Pedro Encarnacion] threw the first pitch away, then he threw another pitch down," Brown said of his home run at-bat. "I was just looking for something to drive right there, hitter's count. I got a good pitch to hit and just tried to drop the head on it."

In the field, Brown -- who is batting .373 with 45 extra-base hits and eight stolen bases in 99 games for Philly this year -- made three putouts and fielded five other balls hit to left.

His 24 homers are nine more than than the next closest Phillie (Chase Utley), while his team-high 69 RBIs are 26 more than Ryan Howard, who ranks second.
